Step-by-Step Instructions for Easy Potato Gratin
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your baking dish with butter.
  2. Slice the potatoes into thin 1/8-inch rounds using a mandoline and keep them in cold water.
  3. Melt butter in a skillet, sauté onion until translucent, then add minced garlic and thyme.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the mixture, whisk for 1-2 minutes, then slowly add milk until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat, stir in cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until melted.
  6. Layer half of the potatoes in the baking dish, cover with half of the cheese sauce.
  7. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce, topping with extra Gruyère.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 45-60 minutes until potatoes are tender, uncover for the last 15-20 minutes.
  9. Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving.
