Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter two 8-inch round cake pans. Line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry and stir gently until just combined.
  5. Fold in hot coffee until the batter is smooth.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for about 35 minutes.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack.
  8. Prepare the frosting by melting the chocolate and beating together butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and sour cream until smooth.
  9. Once cooled, frost the first layer, stack the second layer on top, and frost the entire cake.
