- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a 10x15-inch baking sheet with foil or parchment paper.
- Arrange about 40 saltine crackers in a single layer across the bottom of your prepared baking sheet.
- In a medium saucepan, add 1 cup of unsalted butter and 1 cup of light brown sugar. Heat over medium while stirring constantly until boiling, then cook for 3 minutes until smooth.
- Pour the hot toffee over the crackers, spreading it evenly. Bake for about 5 minutes until bubbly.
- Remove from oven and quickly sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips over the bubbling toffee. Let it soften for 2-3 minutes.
- Spread the softened chocolate into an even layer over the toffee.
- Add optional toppings and press them down gently into the chocolate.
- Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to set.
- Break into irregular pieces once set.
