Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients until well combined.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, shortening, and brown sugar until smooth and creamy.
  3. Add the egg and mix until fully combined, then incorporate the molasses and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually blend the dry mixture into the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Transfer the dough into a lined pan, press it evenly, sprinkle nonpareils, and press slightly.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for 2 to 8 hours to let flavors develop.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) while the dough chills.
  8. Cut the chilled dough into 1/2 inch cubes and place on a baking sheet.
  9. Bake for 7 minutes or until edges are set; let cool on wire rack.
