Preparation Steps
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- Slice sweet potatoes into thin rounds, approximately ⅛ inch thick.
- Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan, whisking in brown sugar, heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
- Layer sweet potatoes in the greased baking dish, pouring the creamy sauce over each layer.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 35 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 20 to 25 minutes until golden.
- If using, sprinkle mini marshmallows over the casserole during the last 5 minutes of baking.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving, optionally garnishing with cinnamon or fresh herbs.
